City of Eagan Wins Award
“This is a win/win partnership”

 The Humphrey Institute’s Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center will honor the City of Eagan with a 2009–2010 Local Government Innovation Award at a 3:30 p.m. ceremony on Wednesday, April 7, at the Humphrey Center.

“We recognize the extra work local governments are doing to balance difficult budgets during this tough economic time. Therefore, the winners deserve the public’s gratitude for real innovation to preserve local services while reducing costs,” says Jay Kiedrowski, senior fellow at the Humphrey Institute.

The City of Eagan teamed up with Thomson Reuters Corporation to create a public–private television studio partnership, which resulted in the newly formed Eagan Television (E–TV) in 2009. The partnership solved immediate technical and financial challenges of the former community television facility and resulted in a production studio located on the Thomson Reuters campus.  It is believed to be the first public access studio located on a corporate campus in the country.

During the day, E-TV staff provides video services in lieu of rent and the studio is used by Thomson for executive communications to its offices around the world. During afternoon and evening hours the studio is utilized by the City of Eagan and residents for community television needs. The partnership has resulted in more than $100,000 in savings that have been allocated to improved community television services.

“This is a win/win partnership,” says Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire. “We have a professional studio, with capability we could not otherwise have afforded, providing services to the public and our internal customer in an exciting new model of public/private partnerships.”

The Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center, in collaboration with the Association of Minnesota Counties, the League of Minnesota Cities, and the Minnesota School Boards Association, hosts the annual Local Government Innovation Awards to recognize outstanding cities, counties, and public schools that have used innovative practices to improve local services.
